Biography

Abdelmadjid Tebboune was born on November 17, 1945, in Mécheria, a town in western Algeria during French rule. He studied at the National School of Administration, where he trained to become a civil servant and government official. This education set the stage for his future in public service. He married Fatima Zohra Bella, and they raised a family as he dove into the complex world of Algerian politics.

Tebboune started his career in the civil service and then moved on to various ministerial roles. He was Minister of Housing from 2001 to 2002, where he worked on urban development and housing policy at a time when Algeria faced big infrastructure challenges. After a ten-year break from this role, he returned to the housing ministry in 2012 and served until 2017, focusing on long-term housing policies and urban planning to meet Algeria's growing population needs.

In May 2017, Tebboune became Prime Minister of Algeria under President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. However, his term was short and turbulent, lasting just three months until August 2017. He was dismissed reportedly due to disagreements with influential business figures and his push for economic reforms that threatened established interests. This brief but impactful period showed his readiness to challenge entrenched economic networks, a stance that would shape his presidential platform.

Tebboune's path to the presidency opened after massive popular protests known as Hirak started in February 2019. These protests led to President Bouteflika's resignation after 20 years in power. After a transition period under acting head of state Abdelkader Bensalah, presidential elections were held in December 2019. Tebboune won, though the election had low voter turnout as many protesters boycotted it, believing all candidates were part of the old system.

Since becoming president in December 2019, Tebboune has also taken on the role of Minister of Defense, ensuring direct control over military matters. His presidency has focused on tackling Algeria's economic issues, such as high unemployment, reliance on hydrocarbon exports, and the need for structural reforms. He has received numerous international honors, including the Knight Grand Cordon with Collar of the Order of Palestine in 2021, the Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and other awards recognizing Algeria's diplomatic ties. After Liamine Zéroual passed away in 2026, Tebboune became the only living former or current Algerian president.

Before Fame

Growing up in Mécheria during the last years of French colonial rule and the early years of Algerian independence, Tebboune saw his country transform from a colonial territory to a sovereign nation. His important years were marked by Algeria's fight for independence, which ended in 1962 when he was seventeen. This experience shaped his views on governance and national sovereignty.

Attending the National School of Administration put him among Algeria's new post-independence administrative leaders. The school aimed to train a new group of Algerian civil servants to take over from the departing French colonial administration. This background gave him the skills and knowledge needed to work within Algeria's complex government, laying the groundwork for his eventual rise from ministerial positions to the presidency.
