Jacqueline Genevieve Fernandez was born on August 11, 1985, in Manama, Bahrain, to a Sri Lankan family. She grew up in Bahrain but went on to study abroad, earning a degree in mass communication from the University of Sydney. After completing her studies, she worked as a television reporter in Sri Lanka, which gave her early experience in the media industry before moving into modeling.

In 2006, Fernandez won the title of Miss Universe Sri Lanka and represented her country at the Miss Universe 2006 pageant. This title brought her significant visibility and opened up opportunities in the entertainment industry. While on a modeling assignment in India in 2009, she auditioned for director Sujoy Ghosh's fantasy drama Aladin, landing the lead female role. This film marked her acting debut and earned her the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female, signaling a promising start to her Bollywood career.

Fernandez's popularity grew with the psychological thriller Murder 2 in 2011, which became her first major hit and established her as a known figure in Hindi cinema. She then appeared in the ensemble comedy Housefull 2 (2012) and the action thriller Race 2 (2013), with her performance in Housefull 2 earning her an IIFA Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. These films showed her ability to perform in big commercial productions alongside established Bollywood stars.

Her career soared with the blockbuster action film Kick in 2014, where she starred opposite Salman Khan, and it became one of the top-grossing Bollywood films of that year. She continued with hits like Housefull 3 (2016), Judwaa 2 (2017), and the action film Race 3 (2018). In 2022, she appeared in the Kannada film Vikrant Rona, showing her willingness to work in regional Indian cinema. Besides acting, she has judged the ninth season of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and has been a prominent celebrity endorser for many brands and products.

Outside her professional life, Fernandez has been actively involved in humanitarian work and has taken part in various charitable activities. Her career path from beauty pageant winner and television reporter in Sri Lanka to one of Bollywood's most commercially successful actresses spans over fifteen years of sustained work in the Indian film industry.
