Biography
Janez Janša, originally Ivan Janša, was born on September 17, 1958, in Grosuplje, Slovenia. He is a Slovenian conservative politician who has been Prime Minister of Slovenia three times: from 2004 to 2008, from 2012 to 2013, and from 2020 to 2022. He studied at the University of Ljubljana and has led the Slovenian Democratic Party since 1993, establishing it as the main right-wing political force in the country. Janša was previously married to Silva Predalič and is now married to Urška Bačovnik Janša.
Janša's political career started in the communist Yugoslav state, where he worked as a journalist and became a key dissident. In 1988, he was arrested by Yugoslav military authorities and tried in a military court case that gained significant attention in Slovenia, strengthening public opposition to communist rule and boosting the independence movement. Many view his prosecution as a kickoff for Slovenian civil society and democratic reform. After Slovenia declared independence in 1991, Janša served as Minister of Defence from 1990 to 1994, a period that included the impactful Ten-Day War against Yugoslav federal forces.
His first stint as Prime Minister lasted from 2004 to 2008, during which Slovenia joined the European Union and NATO. His second term began in early 2012 after parliamentary elections but ended on February 27, 2013, when his government lost a no-confidence vote due to corruption allegations. In June 2013, Janša was sentenced to two years in prison for corruption related to a defense deal. A higher court upheld this in 2014, but following a Constitutional Court order for a retrial due to procedural issues, the case eventually ended without a clear outcome.
Though his party got the most votes in the 2018 Slovenian parliamentary election, Janša was initially passed over as a candidate for prime minister, as many potential coalition partners avoided forming a government under his leadership. He returned to power in March 2020, becoming prime minister when Marjan Šarec resigned. Janša's third term dealt with the early COVID-19 pandemic response but faced major criticism at home and abroad over press freedom and his leadership style. This term ended on May 13, 2022.
Over his career, Janša's political views have changed significantly, evolving from liberal pro-democracy activism in the 1980s to social democratic politics and finally to right-wing, nationalist conservatism. International news outlets such as The Independent, Foreign Policy, NPR, Der Spiegel, and Deutsche Welle have compared his political approach to that of Donald Trump, calling him a far-right leader and populist. He has received various honors, including the Order of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia, the Order of General Maister, and the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru in 2008.
Before Fame
Janez Janša grew up in socialist Yugoslavia, a one-party state where speaking out against the government was risky. He attended the University of Ljubljana, where he got involved with reformist and youth political movements during a time of cautious liberalization in Yugoslavia. Working as a journalist, he challenged official stories and pushed for civil freedoms and democratic governance.
His rise to national attention came in 1988 when he was arrested with three others by Yugoslav military authorities. The trial, conducted in Serbo-Croatian instead of Slovenian, led to mass protests in Ljubljana and is seen as a key moment in Slovenian national awareness. The JBTZ trial turned Janša from a somewhat known dissident into a symbol of resistance against federal communist rule, setting the stage for his important role in Slovenia's move to independence.
