Biography

Jet Li Lianjie, born on April 26, 1963, in Beijing, China, became one of the most influential martial artists and actors in cinema history. He started at the Beijing Shichahai Sports School, where he intensely trained in wushu, a traditional Chinese martial art. From 1974 to 1979, Li excelled in competition with the Beijing Wushu Team, winning many national championships and proving himself as a top athlete before retiring at 16.

Li moved from sports to entertainment with his acting debut in Shaolin Temple (1982), a Hong Kong film that was hugely successful and led to sequels in 1984 and 1986. These films launched his acting career and rekindled interest in Hong Kong kungfu cinema and Shaolin Temple culture. His real martial arts skills and on-screen charisma quickly made him a popular action star across Asia.

In the 1990s, Li gained international fame with his role as Wong Fei-hung in the Once Upon a Time in China series (1991-1993). During this time, he also directed Born to Defence (1988) and starred in acclaimed films like Swordsman II (1992), Fong Sai-yuk (1993), and Fist of Legend (1994), solidifying his status as one of Asia's top action stars.

Li made a successful transition to Hollywood with his role as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), followed by his first leading role in Romeo Must Die (2000). He continued working in both international and Asian films, starring in Luc Besson-produced movies Kiss of the Dragon (2001) and Unleashed (2005), and appearing in Hero (2002), Fearless (2006), and The Warlords (2007). Later career highlights include The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) with Jackie Chan, and The Expendables series (2010-2014).

Apart from entertainment, Li has put a lot of effort into philanthropy and wellness. In 2007, he founded One Foundation, which became China's first registered private charitable fundraising organization in 2011. He also co-founded Taiji Zen, an online platform for meditation and tai chi instruction. His financial success in the industry was noted when he topped Forbes's list of China's richest stars, showing his business skills alongside his artistic achievements.

Before Fame

Li's journey to stardom started in childhood when he was picked for intensive wushu training at the well-known Beijing Shichahai Sports School. His talent and dedication were evident as he moved up the ranks in competitive martial arts. Between 1974 and 1979, during his five-year success with the Beijing Wushu Team, Li's performances caught the eye of film industry scouts. They saw his potential to bring real martial arts skills to movies.

The early 1980s were a time of cultural opening in China, with more collaboration between mainland Chinese and Hong Kong film industries. This was a pivotal moment for Li's career shift, as Hong Kong producers were looking for genuine martial artists to revitalize the kung fu genre with real techniques and new faces from mainland China.
