Biography
Tony Tan Keng Yam was Singapore's seventh President, serving from 2011 to 2017. Before his presidency, he had a notable career in politics, business, and academia. Born in 1940 in Singapore when it was part of the Straits Settlements, Tan studied mathematics and earned a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Adelaide. This education helped shape his future roles in economic planning and policy.
Tan started his political career in 1979 when he was elected to Parliament as a member of the People's Action Party. He moved up quickly, holding several key ministerial roles like Minister for Education, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Trade and Industry. His time as Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 to 2005 made him a leading political figure. He also oversaw national security matters as coordinating minister for security and defence during a period of regional challenges.
Outside of politics, Tan was active in Singapore's financial sector. He was Deputy Chairman and Executive Director of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally. He also led Singapore Press Holdings as its Chairman, steering the company through major industry changes.
In the 2011 presidential election, Tan returned to public service. Running as an independent, he won in the tightest presidential race in Singapore's history, narrowly beating three other candidates. His presidency concentrated on protecting Singapore's financial reserves and ensuring the proper process for public service appointments, which are key duties of the office.
Before Fame
Growing up in colonial Singapore during World War II and its aftermath, Tan saw the changes as the country transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation. He went to school during a time when Singapore was figuring out its identity and setting up self-governing institutions. The focus on education and meritocracy during Singapore's early years of independence influenced his academic interests.
Tan's journey to success began with his studies in mathematics, which took him to Australia for his doctorate at the University of Adelaide. When he returned to Singapore in the 1970s, the country's rapid economic growth matched well with his analytical skills and education, leading to opportunities in economic planning and eventually politics as the People's Action Party gained power.
