Biography
James Adam Belushi was born on June 15, 1954, in Wheaton, Illinois, to Albanian immigrant parents. After attending Wheaton Warrenville South High School, College of DuPage, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Belushi started performing with Chicago's Second City improv comedy troupe. He joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1983, two seasons after his older brother John's death, and stayed on the show until 1985. During his time on SNL, he also appeared in films like Thief (1981) and Trading Places (1983).
In the late 1980s and 1990s, Belushi became known as a character actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. He starred in action comedies like Red Heat (1988) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and K-9 (1989), while also taking serious roles in Oliver Stone's Salvador (1986). His film career covered various genres, from mainstream comedies like Taking Care of Business (1990) to independent films and voice work in animated movies.
Belushi had major television success with the sitcom According to Jim, where he was the star and executive producer. The show aired for eight seasons from 2001 to 2009 on ABC, making him well-known beyond his SNL fame. His work on the show earned him recognition as both a comedic actor and producer.
Outside of acting, Belushi is also a blues musician and harmonica player, performing with his band the Sacred Hearts. He has been married three times, including twice to actress Marjorie Bransfield, and once to Jennifer Sloan. His son Robert Belushi has pursued acting as well. Belushi continues to work in film and TV, with recent projects including voice work in animated movies and dramatic roles that highlight his versatility as a performer.
Before Fame
Growing up in suburban Chicago as the son of Albanian immigrants, Jim Belushi got into performing through his older brother John's early work in comedy. He went to Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he studied speech and theater arts, building the foundation for his later career in entertainment. After college, he followed his brother's path to Chicago's Second City, the famous improvisational comedy theater where John Belushi got his start.
The late 1970s and early 1980s were a great time for Chicago comedy, with Second City being a stepping stone to national television. Belushi sharpened his improvisational skills and character work during this time, getting ready for his big break with Saturday Night Live in 1983.
