Biography
James Ernesto Morales Cabrera, born on March 18, 1969, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, is a comedian, actor, film producer, director, and politician who was the 50th President of Guatemala from 2016 to 2020. His unusual move from the entertainment industry to the presidency surprised many both in Guatemala and abroad. He studied at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and is married to Patricia Marroquín.
Before diving into politics, Morales had a successful career in Guatemalan TV and film. He became well-known as a comedian and actor, earning national popularity that boosted his political campaigns. His production work includes the film Gerardi, which highlighted the murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi Conedera, a key human rights figure in Guatemala. This film showed Morales's focus on serious national issues beyond just entertainment.
Morales ran for president as the candidate of the National Convergence Front party in the 2015 Guatemalan presidential election. His slogan, portraying himself as 'neither corrupt nor a thief,' struck a chord with voters tired of widespread political corruption. He beat Sandra Torres in the second round of voting and took office on January 14, 2016.
His presidency saw a lot of controversies. Despite his anti-corruption campaign, his administration faced allegations of illegal campaign financing. Morales clashed with the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), which was investigating high-level corruption. In 2019, he moved to expel CICIG from the country, a decision that received international backlash from human rights organizations and foreign governments. His relationship with the U.S. changed during his time in office, as his government closely aligned with Washington on migration policy and the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
After his presidency ended in January 2020, Morales continued to face legal trouble over campaign financing allegations. Despite the challenges in his political career, he remains a notable figure in Guatemala, having received the Order of Brilliant Jade, a prestigious Taiwanese honor recognizing bilateral relations and personal achievements.
Before Fame
Growing up in Guatemala City during a time of major political unrest, including the final years of a civil conflict that didn't officially end until the 1996 Peace Accords, Morales matured in a country dealing with deep social divisions and economic inequality. He studied at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, one of the country's top public universities.
His rise to public recognition came through comedy and television. He made a name for himself in Guatemala's entertainment scene as a comedian and TV actor, creating a public image that was approachable, funny, and relatable to everyday Guatemalans. This platform, developed over years on screen, gave him a level of national recognition that few traditional politicians could easily achieve, ultimately laying the groundwork for his unexpected political career.
