Biography

Jintara Poonlarp (Thai: จินตหรา พูนลาภ) was born on March 6, 1969, in Kaset Wisai district, Roi Et province, in northeastern Thailand, known as Isan. She is one of the most notable and productive singers in the mor lam and luk thung genres, which are Thai musical styles rooted in rural culture. Throughout her career, she has released 50 original albums and 47 singles, along with many compilations, making her a key figure in Thai country and pop-country music.

Jintara releases an equal amount of mor lam, a traditional Isan music known for its rapid vocals and regional instruments, and luk thung, a genre like Thai country-pop focusing on rural themes. Despite being closely linked to these traditional forms, she has also found pop success. Her pop songs 'Ma Tammai' and 'Faen Ja,' both with famous Thai entertainer Thongchai McIntyre, are some of her most popular works, reaching audiences beyond mor lam and luk thung fans.

Jintara is known for her distinct look, especially her signature short hair with bangs, which is a big part of her public image. She is often called Jin and has earned the nickname sao siang pin, meaning 'lute-voiced girl,' because of her unique singing voice. She has been performing live for 33 years, showing her popularity and dedication to live shows.

As an actress, Jintara has also been in Thai movies and TV, widening her appeal among Thai viewers. Her roles as both a singer and an actress have kept her visible in Thai entertainment for decades. Her work in luk thung has helped keep the genre alive and interesting to new listeners while also reaching international fans of Thai culture.

Before Fame

Jintara Poonlarp grew up in Kaset Wisai district, Roi Et province, in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand. Isan is the cultural heart of mor lam music, a genre deeply rooted in the folk traditions of the area's mostly farming communities. Growing up in this musical setting gave Jintara early exposure to the vocal styles and instrumental traditions that would shape her career.

In the 1970s and 1980s, luk thung music in Thailand grew from being popular regionally to being recognized nationwide, helped along by radio and the growing Thai recording industry. Talented young performers from rural areas with great vocal skills had more opportunities to record and perform for broader audiences. Jintara came from this background, building on her regional musical roots to hone the skills that would eventually earn her national fame and a career lasting more than 30 years.
