Biography

Sirikit, born Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara on 12 August 1932 in Pathum Wan, Bangkok, was Queen of Thailand from 1950 to 2016, married to King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as Rama IX. The daughter of Prince Nakkhatra Mangkala Kitiyakara, she came from the noble Kitiyakara family. She spent parts of her early life abroad, joining her father during his time as the Thai ambassador to France. In Paris, she met the young King Bhumibol, and they married on 28 April 1950, just before his coronation. They had four children together: Princess Ubol Ratana, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn (who became Rama X), Princess Sirindhorn, and Princess Chulabhorn.

As queen consort, Sirikit was a key public figure who dedicated many years to charitable work, rural development, and preserving Thai arts and crafts. In 1956, when King Bhumibol became a Buddhist monk for a while, she was named queen regent, handling state duties. Her role wasn't just ceremonial; she started and supported programs to improve rural Thai communities' lives. Through the SUPPORT Foundation, created in 1976, she promoted local silk weaving, embroidery, and other crafts, providing income for thousands of families and helping keep these traditions alive.

Besides her social work, Sirikit was passionate about the environment, pushing for forest conservation and reforestation in Thailand. She also had a notable personal side as a pianist and writer, with works like Chao Chom Kwan and Thad Thoe. Her varied contributions earned her recognition both domestically and internationally. She received many awards during her life, including the Order of the Royal House of Chakri and the Order of the Nine Gems in 1950, the Knight of the Order of the Elephant and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1960, the Grand Cross Special Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1960, and the Order of the Crown of the Realm in 1963, along with many others from European countries.

Sirikit had a stroke in 2012 and later gradually stepped back from public duties and appearances. She spent her remaining years quietly, while King Bhumibol continued to reign until his death in October 2016, after which her time as queen consort officially ended. Sirikit passed away on 24 October 2025 at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok at 93, having been queen consort for 66 years, making her the longest-serving queen consort ever.

Before Fame

Sirikit Kitiyakara was born into Thai royal society in 1932, when Thailand, then Siam, was going through major political changes, including the move from absolute to constitutional monarchy. She started her education at Rajini School and St. Francis Xavier Convent School in Bangkok, which served children from the Thai elite and royal families. These early years grounded her in both Thai cultural values and a wider perspective on the world.

Her rise to prominence quickened when her father became the Thai ambassador to France, bringing the family to Europe in the late 1940s. Living in post-World War II Paris, she was exposed to a cosmopolitan setting that enhanced her cultural awareness, including her growth as a pianist. It was during this time in Europe that she met the young King Bhumibol. Their romance blossomed amidst European diplomatic society, leading to their marriage in 1950. Her marriage and the subsequent coronation quickly placed her at the heart of Thailand's national life.
