Biography

Johannes Messenius (1579–1636) was a Swedish historian, playwright, and university professor, born in Freberga, in Stenby parish in Östergötland, Sweden. He is well-known for his extensive work on Swedish history, which he dedicated himself to throughout his academic career. His life was filled with intellectual accomplishments, religious controversy, and a lengthy political imprisonment, yet he continued his scholarly work even under challenging conditions.

Messenius was educated at the Collegium Hosianum, a Jesuit school in Braunsberg (now Braniewo, Poland), where he converted to Catholicism. This conversion affected his life significantly in Lutheran Sweden, causing ongoing tensions with Swedish state and church authorities. Despite these challenges, he became a professor of history and law at Uppsala University, where he began gathering his detailed research on Swedish antiquity and history.

His biggest project was the Scondia Illustrata, a multivolume work meant to detail the complete history of Sweden and Scandinavia from ancient times. Messenius worked on this large-scale project for many years. He also wrote several historical plays, making him one of the early writers of Swedish drama. His plays, based on Swedish historical themes, were performed at Uppsala and helped shape the early Swedish theater.

In 1616, Messenius was arrested for treason and suspected of spying for Poland and Catholic interests. He was sentenced to life in prison and spent the rest of his life held in various fortresses in northern Sweden. Despite his imprisonment, he remained dedicated to his research and continued writing and compiling historical materials from his cell. He died in 1636 in Oulu, now part of Finland, still a prisoner after more than 20 years.

His son Arnold Johan Messenius continued some of his father's work but also had his own conflicts with Swedish authorities. Johannes Messenius is still an important figure in Swedish history for his efforts to record and organize the medieval and early modern history of Sweden when such work was just beginning to take shape.

Before Fame

Johannes Messenius was born in 1579 in rural Östergötland, a region in southern Sweden known for its agricultural and church traditions. The end of the sixteenth century was a time of significant religious and political changes across Europe, as the aftermath of the Reformation altered institutions and alliances throughout Scandinavia. Sweden had fully adopted Lutheranism as the state religion and was working on unifying its political identity under the Vasa dynasty.

Messenius studied at the Collegium Hosianum, a major Jesuit college in Braunsberg, attracting students from northern Europe. There, he converted to Roman Catholicism and received a strong humanist education, covering subjects like history, rhetoric, and law. This education equipped him with the skills for advanced historical research, but his Catholic faith put him at odds with the Swedish authorities. Despite this, his academic credentials were strong enough to secure a professorship at Uppsala University, where he started pursuing his scholarly goals before a dramatic fall from official favor.
