Biography

John Adedayo Bamidele Adegboyega, better known as John Boyega, was born on March 17, 1992, in Peckham, London, to Nigerian parents. Growing up in a working-class family in south London, he quickly developed a love for acting. He attended Westminster City School and South Thames College before training at the Identity School of Acting, which supports talent from underrepresented communities in British entertainment. He also studied at the University of Greenwich.

Boyega first gained significant attention in the UK with his lead role in Joe Cornish's "Attack the Block" (2011), a comedy horror film set in south London where he played Moses, a teenage gang leader defending his housing estate from an alien attack. The film received strong critical praise and established Boyega as a promising young actor. His natural performance and confident screen presence showed a unique talent in British cinema.

His international fame soared when he was cast as Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), directed by J.J. Abrams. His casting sparked discussions about representation in Hollywood, and the film became one of the highest-grossing in history. Boyega returned to the role in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017) and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019), winning the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2016 and the Trophée Chopard at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

After the Star Wars trilogy, Boyega expanded his work with critically acclaimed roles in TV and film. He played Leroy Logan, a Black British police officer facing institutional racism, in "Red, White and Blue" (2020), part of Steve McQueen's "Small Axe" series for the BBC and Amazon. This role earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, showcasing his ability to bring depth to complex real-life characters. He later appeared in "The Woman King" (2022) as King Ghezo of Dahomey, and in "They Cloned Tyrone" (2023), a genre-blending mystery film.

Beyond acting, Boyega has been a vocal advocate for racial equality and diversity in the film industry. In June 2020, he delivered a powerful speech at a Black Lives Matter protest in London's Hyde Park, gaining widespread attention. He founded UpperRoom Productions in January 2016, focusing on projects that tell diverse stories. His public comments on his experiences with racism in the Star Wars franchise and Hollywood have sparked broader discussions about the treatment of Black actors in major films.

Before Fame

John Boyega grew up in Peckham, in the London Borough of Southwark, in a Nigerian-British household. His father, Samson Boyega, was a Pentecostal minister, and his upbringing was shaped by both his Nigerian roots and his south London surroundings. He got interested in acting during his school years and trained at the Identity School of Acting, a drama school aimed at training young people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds who were often not represented in mainstream performing arts education.

He started his professional career with small television roles and theatre productions, leading to his big break in Attack the Block. The film, shot around south London, used the urban environment Boyega was very familiar with, and the realism he brought to the role of Moses came from both his personal background and his formal training. Being cast in a lead role in a British genre film at just eighteen made him one of the most promising young actors of his generation in the United Kingdom.
