Biography

John Sigismund Zápolya was King of Hungary as John II from 1540 to 1551 and again from 1556 to 1570. He then became the first Prince of Transylvania from 1570 until he died in 1571. Born on July 7, 1540, in Buda to John I, King of Hungary, and Isabella of Poland, he faced a complicated political situation throughout his reign. His father ruled parts of Hungary with Ottoman backing, while Ferdinand I of Habsburg controlled the rest. Although a 1538 peace treaty between the two kings gave Ferdinand the right to reunite Hungary after John I's death, John I left his kingdom to his infant son on his deathbed.

After John I died, his supporters chose the infant John Sigismund as king, though he was never crowned with the Holy Crown of Hungary. Sultan Suleiman claimed he was protecting the child king and used this as a reason to invade Hungary, taking Buda in 1541 easily. Suleiman allowed Isabella to keep the land east of the Tisza River for her son. The royal court first moved to Lippa and then settled in Gyulafehérvár, Transylvania, where John Sigismund spent much of his life.

His father's treasurer, George Martinuzzi, ran the young king's realm and worked toward reuniting Hungary under Ferdinand's rule. In 1551, Martinuzzi forced Isabella to give up her son's kingdom for two Silesian duchies and 140,000 florins. This led John Sigismund and his mother to exile in Poland, though Isabella kept trying to restore her son's status through talks with Ferdinand's rivals.

Ferdinand's struggles to protect eastern Hungary from Ottoman attacks gave John Sigismund a chance to return. With Suleiman's support, the Transylvanian Diet invited John Sigismund and Isabella back to Transylvania in 1556. Isabella ruled until her death in 1559, when John Sigismund took charge. His reign involved trying to stay in the Ottomans' favor while keeping his Christian subjects' autonomy. In 1570, he changed his title from King of Hungary to Prince of Transylvania, reflecting the political situation. John Sigismund died on March 14, 1571, in Alba Iulia, remembered as the founder of the Principality of Transylvania.

Before Fame

John Sigismund's rise was entirely due to his birth in the divided Kingdom of Hungary during one of its most chaotic times. As a baby, he was at the center of a power struggle between the Habsburg and Zápolya families, with the Ottoman Empire playing a key role. His childhood was marked by exile and instability, moving between different courts and lands as his mother Isabella fought to keep his inheritance.

The chaotic politics of 16th-century Hungary shaped John Sigismund's rule. The kingdom had been shattered by the Battle of Mohács in 1526, which killed King Louis II and caused a succession crisis. This situation allowed for two monarchies to arise, with the Zápolya family leaning on Ottoman help to hold their claim against the Habsburgs' attempt to unite all Hungarian lands under Ferdinand I.
