Biography

John X, originally named Hani Yazigi, was born on January 1, 1955, in Latakia, Syria. He has been the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East since 2012. He heads one of the oldest Christian patriarchates in the world, which dates back to the early Christian community in Antioch, where followers of Jesus were first named Christians. His election was an important moment for the Antiochian Orthodox Church, occurring during a severe political and humanitarian crisis in Syria after the civil war began in 2011.

Before Fame

Hani Yazigi grew up in Latakia, a coastal city in northwestern Syria known for its variety of religious backgrounds. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Latakia and then went on to study theology at the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology, the main Orthodox theological school in the Arab world, located at the University of Balamand in Lebanon. He furthered his education at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, a leading center for Orthodox theological studies. This blend of Arab and Greek Orthodox education influenced his theological perspective and prepared him for church leadership. Before becoming patriarch, he worked as the Metropolitan of Western and Central Europe, gaining much experience in ecumenical dialogue and caring for diaspora communities.
