Biography

Juan Gerardo Antonio Guaidó Márquez was born on July 28, 1983, in La Guaira, Venezuela. He studied industrial engineering at Andrés Bello Catholic University and later continued his education at George Washington University in the United States. His engineering studies gave him the analytical skills he later used in his political work during Venezuela's complex constitutional crisis.

Guaidó started his political career in college when he became a well-known student leader during the 2007 protests against the government of Hugo Chávez. His activism during this time made him a voice for democratic opposition and civil rights. In 2009, he helped found the Popular Will party with Leopoldo López, offering a social-democratic option within Venezuela's opposition movement. The following year, he was elected as an alternate deputy to the National Assembly for the state of Vargas.

In 2015, Guaidó was elected as a full deputy to the National Assembly, gaining more prominence within the opposition. In January 2019, following the party rotation protocol for the presidency of the National Assembly, Popular Will nominated Guaidó for the position, placing him at the center of Venezuela's most serious constitutional crisis in years.

On January 23, 2019, Guaidó declared himself interim president of Venezuela, citing constitutional provisions after the National Assembly deemed Nicolás Maduro's 2018 re-election illegitimate. This declaration led to an international diplomatic crisis, with over 50 countries recognizing Guaidó as Venezuela's rightful president while others continued to recognize Maduro's government. The dual presidency situation continued for several years, with Guaidó operating mainly from Caracas, facing restrictions and threats from the Maduro administration, which froze his assets and investigated him for alleged foreign interference.

Before Fame

Growing up in La Guaira during Venezuela's oil boom under Hugo Chávez, Guaidó saw the country's increasing political divides and economic changes firsthand. His teenage years were marked by growing restrictions on media and civil rights, which shaped his later political activism. As a university student, he got involved in student movements opposing government policies that restricted academic freedom and democratic institutions.

His rise as a student leader during the 2007 protests against the shutdown of RCTV television station marked his shift from private citizen to public figure. These protests were among the largest against Chávez, and Guaidó's efforts in organizing university students built his reputation within the broader democratic opposition movement.
