Biography
Jeon Jung-kook, professionally known as Jung Kook, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer, born September 1, 1997, in Busan, South Korea. He became known worldwide as the youngest member and main vocalist of BTS, one of the most successful K-pop groups ever. His music career began in his early teens when he joined Big Hit Entertainment as a trainee and debuted with BTS in 2013 at age 15.
With BTS, Jung Kook has been key to the group's global success through his singing and creative input. He has co-written and co-produced many of the group's tracks and has also made his mark as a solo artist within BTS' albums. His solo songs "Begin" (2016), "Euphoria" (2018), and "My Time" (2020) did well on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart, showing his talent for connecting with fans through personal storytelling and emotional delivery.
Jung Kook started focusing more on his solo work in 2022 with his collaboration on Charlie Puth's "Left and Right," which reached number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Later that year, he became the first South Korean artist to be part of an official FIFA World Cup soundtrack with "Dreamers," which he performed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar, taking K-pop to a global sporting stage.
In 2023, Jung Kook had great success with his debut solo single "Seven" featuring Latto. The song broke several records, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Global 200, and Global Excl. U.S. charts, making him the first Korean solo artist to do this. The track set a Spotify record by surpassing 1 billion streams faster than any other song, showing his global appeal as a solo artist. His next single "3D" featuring Jack Harlow also did well, debuting at number five on both the Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart, making him the first South Korean solo artist with two consecutive top-five entries on the UK chart. These achievements cemented his role in spreading K-pop and Korean popular culture worldwide.
Before Fame
Jung Kook was born and raised in Busan, South Korea's second-largest city, during the 2000s when the Korean Wave (Hallyu) was growing. He got interested in music early on and learned to play the guitar and drums, influenced by genres like pop, rock, and R&B. His journey to fame began when he auditioned for the South Korean talent show "Superstar K" at 13 in 2011, but he was eliminated early.
Even though he didn't get far in the competition, his audition caught the eye of several entertainment companies. He decided to join Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE Corporation) after meeting producer Bang Si-hyuk, who was forming BTS. Jung Kook moved to Seoul to train, going to the School of Performing Arts Seoul to continue his education while honing his skills as a performer. He later went to Global Cyber University. His hard work during his trainee period, along with his natural talent in singing and performing, got him selected as the final member of BTS before their debut in 2013.
