Biography
Kōnosuke Matsushita was born on November 27, 1894, in Wakayama, Japan, into a farming family that fell on hard times financially. After his family lost their wealth, Matsushita had to leave school at nine and work as an apprentice at a hibachi store in Osaka. He later joined the Osaka Electric Light Company, where he got valuable experience with electrical systems and honed his entrepreneurial skills. In 1918, at 23, Matsushita started Matsushita Electric Housewares Manufacturing Works with his wife Mumeno and his brother-in-law. They began with just three employees in a small rented house and started by making duplex lamp sockets, an improved electrical adapter that Matsushita designed to be more efficient and safer than existing ones. The business grew steadily in the 1920s as Matsushita added bicycle lamps, electric irons, and radios to their line-up. His management style focused on treating employees like family, sharing profits with them, and creating products that improved everyday life. During World War II, the company had to produce military equipment, but Matsushita rebuilt afterward, renaming it Matsushita Electric Industrial Company in 1935. Under his leadership, the company became a global electronics powerhouse, launching innovative products and setting up manufacturing facilities overseas. Matsushita created a unique company culture around his belief in contributing to society through business. He founded the PHP Research Institute in 1946 to study human happiness and social progress and later opened The Matsushita Institute of Government and Management in 1979 to train future political leaders. Known as Japan's 'God of Management,' Matsushita stepped down from day-to-day management in 1973 but stayed influential until he died on April 27, 1989, in Moriguchi.
Before Fame
Matsushita grew up in poverty, which greatly influenced his business approach later in life. Born into a farming family that lost both its land and wealth, he started working as a child laborer at the age of nine, experiencing the real struggles of working-class families. His experience at the Osaka Electric Light Company was crucial. There, he learned about electrical systems and noticed inefficiencies in existing products, which inspired his entrepreneurial dreams. During the Meiji era, Japan was modernizing its economy, and this period of rapid industrialization and adoption of Western technology offered many opportunities for innovative entrepreneurs, especially in the new electrical industry.
