Biography
Karisma Kapoor is an Indian actress who became a top leading lady in Hindi cinema during the 1990s. Born on June 25, 1974, in Mumbai, she is part of the Kapoor family, with actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita as her parents. She went to Cathedral and John Connon School and started in films young, showing that she could handle both big hits and serious dramas.
Kapoor started acting in 1991 with Prem Qaidi, which was moderately successful. She soon became well-known with successful films in the early '90s like Jigar (1992) and Anari (1993). Her career took off with Raja Hindustani (1996), a hit romance that won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and made her a major box office star. She continued her success with her role as a passionate dancer in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), winning a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Filmfare Award.
In the late '90s and early 2000s, Kapoor stayed popular through comedies with director David Dhawan, like Hero No.1 (1997), Biwi No.1 (1999), and Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000). She was also in Sooraj Barjatya's family drama Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), a big commercial hit. Her acting skills were further highlighted in dramatic films like Fiza (2000) and Zubeidaa (2001), earning her more critical praise and Filmfare Awards.
In 2003, Kapoor married businessman Sunjay Kapur, and they had two children. The couple divorced in 2016 after a well-publicized separation. After her marriage, Kapoor cut back her film appearances and took a break from full-time acting in 2004. She sometimes returned to entertainment, with roles in the TV series Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny (2003-2004), various reality show judging spots, the web series Mentalhood (2020), and the film Murder Mubarak (2024). Outside of acting, she has participated in stage shows and worked as a celebrity brand ambassador.
Before Fame
Growing up in the Kapoor family, Karisma was surrounded by the film industry early on, with her father Randhir Kapoor being a well-known actor and her grandfather Raj Kapoor being a famous filmmaker. However, her path to acting wasn't completely set in stone, as her mother Babita had left the film industry after getting married.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bollywood was going through a change, leaning towards more commercially successful films and introducing new-generation actors. Kapoor's first role came at this time, as producers were looking for new faces who could attract younger audiences while still having the charm of well-known film families.
