Biography

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was born on June 25, 1937, in Kuwait City, into the ruling Al-Sabah family. He went to Mubarkiya School, one of Kuwait's oldest schools. Early in life, his family background in governance set him up for a long career in public service, spanning over four decades.

Nawaf started his political career in the interior ministry and eventually became the Minister of Interior from 1978 to 1988. During this time, he worked to strengthen Kuwait's internal security amid regional instability. He then turned his attention to defense, serving as Minister of Defense from 1988 to 1991, a crucial time that included the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the Gulf War. His leadership during this turbulent period helped coordinate Kuwait's resistance and liberation efforts.

After Kuwait was liberated, Nawaf returned as Minister of Interior from 2003 to 2006, focusing on rebuilding and modernizing the country's security systems. On February 7, 2006, he was named Crown Prince during his half-brother Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's reign. Over fourteen years as Crown Prince, he actively participated in state affairs while preparing to eventually take the throne.

Nawaf became the 16th Emir of Kuwait in 2020 and also served as Deputy Prime Minister. During his three-year reign, he worked on resolving internal political issues and kept Kuwait's traditional role as a regional mediator. Despite his short time in power, he aimed to uphold Kuwait's constitutional monarchy while handling complex domestic and regional challenges. He passed away on December 16, 2023, at Jaber al Ahmad Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated public service.

Before Fame

Growing up in Kuwait during the 1940s and 1950s, Nawaf saw his country change from a modest pearling and trading hub to an oil-rich state. The discovery and use of oil reserves during his youth significantly changed Kuwait's economy and international standing. He attended Mubarkiya School, which opened in 1911 as Kuwait's first formal school, linking him to the country's push for modern education.

The political environment of his early years was influenced by Kuwait's gradual move toward independence from British control, achieved in 1961. As a member of the Al-Sabah ruling family, Nawaf experienced the challenges of governance as Kuwait was starting to form its identity as a sovereign nation, while also keeping its traditional tribal and family power structures.
