Biography

Karl Otto Lagerfeld (1933-2019) was a German fashion designer, photographer, and creative director, widely recognized as a major force in luxury fashion during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Born in Hamburg on September 10, 1933, Lagerfeld developed an early passion for fashion and drawing, which took him to Paris in the 1950s to pursue a career in haute couture.

Lagerfeld started his professional journey in the 1950s, working for notable fashion houses like Balmain, Patou, and Chloé, where he refined his design skills and formed his unique style. His big break came in 1983 when he became the creative director of Chanel, a role he held until his death in 2019. During his time at Chanel, Lagerfeld revitalized the brand, transforming it from a venerable but somewhat quiet label into a global luxury leader, updating Coco Chanel's classic designs for modern audiences while staying true to the brand's spirit.

At the same time, Lagerfeld was also the creative director for the Italian fashion house Fendi, starting in 1965, where he changed their approach to fur and leather products. He launched his own label as well, showing his flexibility across various markets and design approaches. Beyond fashion, Lagerfeld was a skilled photographer, often taking his own campaign and editorial photos, with his work shown in galleries and published in many books.

Lagerfeld was not only known for his creative work but also for his unique look, marked by his white ponytail, dark sunglasses, high-collared white shirts, and fingerless gloves. He was nicknamed "Kaiser Karl" for his powerful presence in fashion and prolific output. His interests went beyond fashion to include literature, art, and architecture, and he was known for his large personal library and cultural knowledge. Lagerfeld passed away on February 19, 2019, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, leaving a legacy that deeply influenced modern luxury fashion.

Before Fame

Karl Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg to a wealthy family, with his father working in the condensed milk business. As a child, he loved drawing and fashion, often sketching clothing designs. Even though he grew up during and after World War II in Germany, he stayed focused on art and moved to Paris in the 1950s.

Lagerfeld got his start in fashion by winning a design competition in 1954, which landed him a job at Pierre Balmain. At that time, Paris was going through a cultural revival, and the fashion industry was rebuilding as a hub of luxury and creativity. This was the perfect setting for Lagerfeld to learn from experienced designers and craft his own style, eventually transforming several fashion houses.
