Biography

Ma Yun, known as Jack Ma, was born on September 10, 1964, in Hangzhou, China. He faced challenges with the gaokao exam, failing twice before finally passing on his third try. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from Hangzhou Normal University in 1988. After graduation, he became a lecturer at Hangzhou Dianzi University, teaching English and developing an interest in internet technologies. A trip to the United States in 1995 introduced him to the internet, inspiring his idea to bring e-commerce to China.

In 1994, Ma started a translation agency and launched its website the following year, marking his entry into the internet business. He left his university job to run an online yellow pages service, which was bought by China Telecommunications Corporation in 1996. The partnership with the state-owned company was difficult, leading to his exit in 1997. He then worked on developing websites for China's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, gaining experience in digital commerce and working with the government.

The key moment in Ma's career was in 1999 when he co-founded Alibaba Group with seventeen others in his Hangzhou apartment. Originally a business-to-business marketplace connecting Chinese manufacturers with global buyers, Alibaba quickly grew into a vast digital company. Under Ma, it expanded to include consumer platforms like Taobao and Tmall, cloud services through Alibaba Cloud, and digital payment options with Alipay. His charismatic leadership and clear vision for internet-based commerce made him a leading figure in Chinese entrepreneurship.

Ma was also active in philanthropy and education. He started the Jack Ma Foundation, which focuses on education reform, entrepreneurship, and environmental conservation. He received various international awards, like the Knight of the Legion of Honour from France in 2016 and the Pioneer of Reform award in 2018. However, his prominence declined after 2020 when Chinese authorities stopped the initial public offering of Ant Group, his fintech company, after he criticized financial regulators. This marked a shift, leading to his gradual withdrawal from public life and business, though his impact on China's digital economy remains significant.

Before Fame

Growing up in Hangzhou during China's Cultural Revolution, Ma struggled with academics early on, especially in math, which led to repeated failures in the gaokao university entrance exam. His determination to learn English, partly by giving free tours to foreign tourists in Hangzhou, showed the perseverance that later marked his entrepreneurial journey. After finally getting into Hangzhou Normal University, he stood out as an English teacher, without any formal training in tech or business.

Ma's entrepreneurial journey was unusual for his time, as China was just starting to open up to market reforms and private business in the 1990s. On a business trip to Seattle in 1995, he discovered the internet's potential to connect Chinese businesses with global markets. This experience, along with his English skills and teaching background, uniquely positioned him to link China's growing digital economy with international trade.
