Biography

Kevin Ullyett was born on May 23, 1972, in Harare, Zimbabwe, known as Rhodesia at the time. He became one of the top doubles players of his generation on the ATP Tour, winning 34 doubles titles during a career that lasted almost twenty years. While he didn't achieve much in singles, his skills at the net and partnership with Wayne Black made him a regular in men's doubles during the late 1990s and 2000s.

Ullyett and Black were a highly successful doubles team, winning two Grand Slam titles together at the 2001 US Open and the 2005 Australian Open. They were a strong team representing Zimbabwe, a country not usually seen at the top levels of tennis. The duo also played for Zimbabwe at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, finishing fifth in doubles at the 2004 Athens Games. After Black retired in 2005, Ullyett played with several partners, including Paul Hanley, Jonas Björkman, and Bruno Soares from Brazil.

In mixed doubles, Ullyett also did well, teaming up with Slovak player Daniela Hantuchová. They won the 2002 Australian Open mixed doubles title and reached the Wimbledon final the same year. Ullyett reached the Wimbledon mixed doubles semifinals in 2003 with Hantuchová and again in 2005 with South African Liezel Huber. He and Huber were runners-up at the 2005 Australian Open in mixed doubles, showing his skill in both doubles formats.

Ullyett first appeared on the ATP Tour at the South African Open in 1992 and played his last professional match at the same tournament in February 2010, partnering with Wesley Moodie. His career included more than 500 wins. After retiring from professional tennis, Ullyett settled in London with his wife and two children, including his daughter Jemima, born in 2005. He is interested in a career in property development.

Before Fame

Kevin Ullyett grew up in Zimbabwe during a time of big political and social changes after the country gained independence in 1980. Tennis in Zimbabwe had a modest but real presence, and Ullyett came from a family that supported high-level sports. His father, Robert Ullyett, represented Rhodesia in cricket and field hockey and was part of the Rhodesian field hockey team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Ullyett started his professional career in 1992, making his first ATP Tour appearance at the South African Open. In his early years on the tour, he focused on honing the net skills and court awareness that became key parts of his professional game. Playing for a smaller tennis nation meant having fewer resources, but Ullyett steadily improved his game. He eventually found his niche in doubles, where his movement, communication, and tactical sense helped him compete at the highest level.
