Biography

Khaled Mashal was born on May 28, 1956, in Silwad, a Palestinian village in the West Bank. His early life changed dramatically after the 1967 Six-Day War when the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip forced his family to leave Palestine, starting a life in exile that would shape his political path. The family moved to Kuwait, where Mashal went to school at Kuwait University and developed his political awareness.

When Hamas was founded in 1987 during the First Intifada, Mashal quickly became a key figure, leading the movement's branch in Kuwait. His effectiveness while in exile made him crucial to the organization's external operations. In 1992, he co-founded Hamas' politburo and was elected chairman, placing him at the heart of the movement's strategic decision-making.

Mashal rose to overall leadership of Hamas in 2004 after Israel assassinated the organization's spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and successor Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi just weeks apart. As the senior surviving leader, Mashal became the head of Hamas, taking on leadership of a major Palestinian political movement. Under him, Hamas won a landmark victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, gaining a surprise majority that changed Palestinian politics.

During his time as Hamas' political leader from 1996 to 2017, Mashal mostly operated from Qatar and other Arab countries. He directed the organization's political strategy while remaining outside the Palestinian territories, helping him maintain diplomatic ties across the Arab world and avoid direct Israeli military action. His leadership focused on political maneuvering and international diplomacy alongside military resistance. After reaching the term limit, Mashal stepped down as politburo chairman in May 2017, with Ismail Haniyeh taking over. However, after other Hamas leaders were assassinated, Mashal returned to leadership roles twice in 2024, showing his ongoing importance to the group's survival and continuity.

Before Fame

Mashal's journey to political prominence was shaped by his family's displacement during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Growing up in Kuwait as a Palestinian refugee, he saw the challenges Palestinians faced while living in exile in the Arab world. His time at Kuwait University happened during a significant period of Palestinian political awakening, with various nationalist and Islamic movements vying for influence among the diaspora communities.

The rise of Hamas in 1987 gave Mashal an opportunity to align with a group that mixed Palestinian nationalism with Islamic ideology. Being in Kuwait, a wealthy Gulf state with a large Palestinian community, allowed him to be in a good position to develop the movement's external support networks and financial infrastructure. Instead of hindering his political growth, the experience of exile actually improved his ability to operate on the wider regional stage that would mark his later leadership role.
