Biography
Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, born on November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, began his acting career in the late 1980s through TV commercials. He then had a recurring role in the sitcom Parenthood from 1990 to 1991. His first notable film role was in This Boy's Life (1993) as author Tobias Wolff. That same year, he got his first Academy Award nomination for his role as a developmentally disabled boy in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which showed his talent as a serious actor at a young age.
DiCaprio became widely known internationally with his roles in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996) and James Cameron's Titanic (1997). Titanic became the highest-grossing movie at the time, turning DiCaprio into one of the biggest film stars globally. Following Titanic's massive success, he chose to take on fewer projects and sought out more complex roles. His work with director Martin Scorsese, starting with Gangs of New York (2002) and continuing with films like The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), became one of the most notable actor-director collaborations in modern cinema.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, DiCaprio earned acclaim for his intense performances in movies such as Blood Diamond (2006), Revolutionary Road (2008), Inception (2010), Django Unchained (2012), and The Great Gatsby (2013). His role in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's The Revenant (2015) won him an Academy Award for Best Actor, after many prior nominations. The performance also brought him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama in 2016.
Aside from acting, DiCaprio has been a dedicated environmental activist for years. He started the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, which focuses on environmental and climate change issues. He produced and narrated several environmental documentaries, like The 11th Hour (2007) and Before the Flood (2016), using his platform to push for policy changes. His activism has earned him recognition in fields outside entertainment, including the Horatio Alger Award in 2011.
DiCaprio's films as a lead actor have made over seven billion dollars worldwide, and he has frequently been listed among the highest-paid actors globally. Besides his Academy Award, he has won a Silver Bear for Best Actor from the Berlin International Film Festival, three Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award, and an Emmy Award, among other honors. He remains one of Hollywood's leading and most influential actors.
