Biography

Lilavati was a Sri Lankan queen who ruled the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa during three different periods: 1197–1200, 1209–1210, and 1211–1212. She was the fourth woman in Sri Lankan history to rule as a sovereign in her own right. Born around 1150 to Sirivallabha Pandya and Queen Sugala, Lilavati was of royal descent and connected to the influential Pandya dynasty that controlled parts of southern Sri Lanka.

She married her cousin Parakramabahu I, one of Sri Lanka's most famous monarchs and ruler of Polonnaruwa. The exact date of their marriage is unknown, but it probably happened during Parakramabahu's rise to power. As queen consort, Lilavati saw her husband's many military campaigns and administrative reforms that transformed the kingdom into a significant power in the Indian Ocean region. However, her family relationships were filled with conflict, as her brother Manabharana Pandya of Ruhuna often fought against Parakramabahu, and her mother Sugala was described in chronicles as having a difficult nature.

After Parakramabahu's death in 1186, the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa fell into chaos with several contenders for the throne. Lilavati emerged as a political leader during this unstable time, supported by military commanders who recognized her legitimacy as Parakramabahu's widow and her own royal lineage. Her first reign started in 1197 and lasted until 1200, during which she tried to restore order to the kingdom.

Lilavati's following reigns were short but important, taking place in 1209–1210 and 1211–1212. Each time she regained power, it was due to political crises and the inability of other rulers to maintain stability. Her repeated ascension to the throne shows her political skill and the respect she commanded among the nobility and military elite. The main historical source documenting her life and reigns is the Culavamsa, a chronicle that gives detailed accounts of Sri Lankan royalty, especially in chapter LXXX, which covers her time.

Before Fame

Lilavati's early life was shaped by the intricate political scene of 12th-century Sri Lanka, where multiple kingdoms competed for control of the island. Born into the Pandya royal family that held power in southern Ruhuna, she grew up during a time when her uncle Manabharana Pandya ruled Dhakkinadesa. After his death, the family moved to be with her father, Sirivallabha.

During her youth, her cousin Parakramabahu was working to conquer and unify the divided kingdoms of Sri Lanka, dominating the political scene. Her prominent role began thanks to her family connection and her marriage to Parakramabahu, placing her at the heart of the island's strongest court. However, her rise was complicated by ongoing family disputes, as her brother Manabharana repeatedly clashed with her husband, despite being married to Parakramabahu's sisters.
