Biography

Lü Buwei (291-235 BCE) was a merchant who turned into a politician, becoming a key figure during the late Warring States period. Born in the state of Wey, he initially made his wealth in commerce before jumping into the complex world of politics. His keen political skills and readiness to invest in long-term plans ultimately led him to power in the Qin state, where he was chancellor and regent during an important time in China's unification. When he met the future King Zhuangxiang of Qin, who was a hostage in Zhao, it marked the start of his remarkable political journey. Using strategic bribes and careful planning, Lü Buwei helped Zhuangxiang rise to the throne, becoming the main influence behind the crown. When Zhuangxiang became king in 250 BCE, he appointed Lü Buwei as chancellor in 249 BCE and gave him the noble title of Marquis Wenxin. After Zhuangxiang's death in 247 BCE, Lü Buwei became the regent for the young prince Ying Zheng, who later became Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China. During his regency, Lü Buwei held enormous power over state affairs and continued Qin's expansion policies. However, he fell from grace due to a palace scandal involving Queen Dowager Zhao and her lover Lao Ai. In 235 BCE, he lost his titles and was exiled to the remote Shu region, where he ended his life by taking poison to avoid further humiliation.

Before Fame

Lü Buwei was born into the merchant class in the state of Wey during the chaotic Warring States period. He started off as a trader and became successful in business. This era was marked by constant warfare, shifting alliances, and the merging of smaller states into larger ones. During this time, people with exceptional abilities could move up socially, as the traditional aristocracy was being challenged by capable individuals from merchant and scholarly backgrounds. Lü Buwei's rise from merchant to political powerbroker showed how wealth and strategic thinking could grant access to the top levels of government.
