Biography

Mathangi Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., was born on July 18, 1975, in Hounslow, London, to Sri Lankan Tamil parents. When she was just six months old, her family moved to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka, where she spent her early years during the growing Sri Lankan Civil War. This conflict made her family return to London as refugees when she was 11, a life-changing experience that deeply influenced her art and political awareness.

M.I.A. went to several schools, including Holy Family Convent in Jaffna, Ricards Lodge High School, and Central Saint Martins, where she studied fine art. She started out as a visual artist, filmmaker, and designer around 2000, then shifted to music in 2002. Early in her career, she cleverly used the internet to reach an audience, becoming one of the first artists to gain fame through online platforms.

Her big break came in 2004 with the singles "Sunshowers" and "Galang," which made her a standout in underground music. Her debut album "Arular" (2005) and the follow-up "Kala" (2007) were widely acclaimed for blending hip-hop, electronic, and world music. The hit "Paper Planes" from "Kala," which reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy, brought her wider fame while keeping her politically charged style.

M.I.A. has released five studio albums: "Arular," "Kala," "Maya" (2010), "Matangi" (2013), and "AIM" (2016). Her work often deals with themes like war, displacement, immigration, and global politics, inspired by her personal experience as a refugee and her views on world conflicts. Besides music, she has worked as a music video director, fashion designer, and visual artist, keeping a multifaceted approach to her work. Her activism and contributions to the arts were honored when she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Before Fame

M.I.A.'s rise to musical fame was unique. She started as a visual artist and filmmaker in London's underground scene. After studying fine art at Central Saint Martins, she focused on documentaries and visual art installations about her Sri Lankan background and the civil war there. Her move to music happened gradually. She began by making backing tracks for her friend Justine Frischmann and then developed her own sound reflecting her experiences with displacement and cultural mixing.

The early 2000s were a time when the internet started changing how music was shared and discovered. M.I.A. took advantage of this by using platforms like MySpace and early music blogs to build her fan base directly, avoiding traditional industry hurdles. Her unique mix of political messages and innovative production, along with her bold visual style, caught attention in London's alternative music scene and soon reached a global audience through online networks.
