Biography

Mohammad Daoud Khan was a key figure in Afghanistan's political changes in the mid-20th century. Born into the Afghan royal family on July 18, 1909, in Kabul, he was a cousin of King Mohammad Zahir Shah. Khan started as a provincial governor, then moved to a military role, eventually becoming a powerful political leader in Afghanistan.

In 1953, King Mohammad Zahir Shah made him Prime Minister, a position he held until 1963. During that time, Khan pushed for modernization and policies to boost Afghanistan's standing in regional politics. He favored centralized power and progressive social reforms but grew frustrated with the limitations of the constitutional monarchy.

When he couldn't convince the King to agree to a one-party system, Khan led a coup in 1973 with the help of Afghan Army officers. The almost bloodless takeover ended Afghanistan's centuries-long royal rule. Khan declared himself the first President of the Republic of Afghanistan and started a new government under his National Revolutionary Party. As president, he aimed for broad social and economic changes, including educational projects and advancing women's rights.

Khan faced political strain and tough foreign relations while in power. He removed communists from his government but also dealt with resistance from both religious conservatives and liberals who wanted a return to multiparty democracy. His foreign policy led to tensions with neighbors like Pakistan and Iran. On April 28, 1978, Khan was overthrown and killed in a coup by the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. His body, lost for 30 years, was later identified thanks to a small golden Quran he always carried, given to him by King Khalid of Saudi Arabia. He was eventually given a state funeral, closing a tumultuous period in Afghan politics.

Before Fame

Mohammad Daoud Khan was born into the well-known Mohammadzai dynasty, which had ruled Afghanistan since the 19th century. He grew up during a time when Afghanistan was trying to balance British and Russian influences while also modernizing. In the early 20th century, Afghanistan worked to assert its independence, especially after the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919, which allowed the country to control its foreign policy.

Khan started his career along the typical path for Afghan royalty, taking on roles as a provincial governor, where he gained experience in governance and military matters. As he moved up the military ranks, Afghanistan was focused on creating modern armed forces and administrative systems. The 1940s and early 1950s were a time of political debate over constitutional monarchy and modernization, setting the stage for his rise to Prime Minister under his cousin's rule.
