He attended Lars-Erik Larsson-gymnasiet for high school, a school in Lund known for producing several notable Swedish cultural figures. From a young age, Zelmerlöw showed a strong interest in performance, which led him to pursue acting as well as a career in music and TV presenting.
Zelmerlöw first gained national attention in 2005 on the Swedish version of Idol, finishing in fifth place. Even though he didn't win, the show introduced him to a wide Swedish audience and helped kickstart his career. He then won the first season of the Swedish dance competition Let's Dance, further establishing himself as a versatile entertainer. In 2007, he scored a big hit with 'Cara Mia,' which was his entry in that year's Melodifestivalen, Sweden's national selection for Eurovision.
In the following years, Zelmerlöw continued to develop his career in music and TV. He was the host of the popular Swedish sing-along show Allsång på Skansen from 2011 to 2013, reaching millions of Swedish viewers every summer. In 2012, he was named Lunden Resident Of The Year, recognizing his local influence. He took part in Melodifestivalen again in 2009 and returned in 2015 with 'Heroes,' which won and allowed him to represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria.
At Eurovision 2015, Zelmerlöw's performance of 'Heroes' was praised for its creative use of animated visual effects. He won the contest, giving Sweden its sixth Eurovision win and one of the highest scores in the competition's modern history. This victory boosted his international profile and led to more opportunities in European entertainment. He later married British actress and singer Ciara Janson, broadening his personal and professional ties to the United Kingdom.
In the years that followed, Zelmerlöw has stayed active as both a recording artist and TV personality. He returned to Melodifestivalen in 2025, showing his ongoing connection with the Swedish music competition that helped launch his career 20 years before. His work spans acting, singing, and presenting, making him one of the most versatile figures in today's Swedish entertainment scene.
