Biography

Denis Yurievich Ten was a Kazakhstani figure skater who became his country's top athlete in the sport. Born on June 13, 1993, in Almaty, Ten rose to prominence as Kazakhstan's leading figure skater during the 2010s, breaking many barriers for Central Asian athletes in international figure skating. His career hit its peak when he won the bronze medal in men's singles at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. This made him Kazakhstan's first Olympic medalist in figure skating and only the second Winter Olympic medalist in the country's history.

Ten's accomplishments went beyond the Olympics. He won two World Championship medals, taking silver in 2013 and bronze in 2015, making him the first skater from Kazakhstan to reach the World Championships podium. His victory at the 2015 Four Continents Championship was another historic first for his nation. Domestically, he dominated national competitions, winning eight straight Kazakhstani national titles. His international breakthrough came at the 2008-09 ISU Junior Grand Prix event in Belarus, where he became the first skater from Kazakhstan to win an International Skating Union event.

Outside of competitions, Ten significantly promoted figure skating and winter sports in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. He was the official ambassador for Almaty's bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, using his international profile to support his home city's Olympic dreams. In 2013, he started his own ice show, "Denis Ten and Friends," which helped popularize figure skating in the region and offered a stage for emerging skaters. He was a member of the Astana Presidential Sports Club and was part of the ruling political party Nur Otan.

Tragically, Ten's career was cut short when he was murdered on July 19, 2018, in Almaty during an attempted robbery. Two individuals were trying to steal his car mirrors when the incident occurred. His death at age 25 shocked the international figure skating community, leading to many tributes from athletes and officials worldwide. In honor of his contributions to Kazakhstani sport, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Kurmet, one of the country's highest honors.

Before Fame

Denis Ten began figure skating at a young age in Almaty, honing his skills in a country with limited support for winter sports and no tradition in figure skating. He trained during Kazakhstan's early years of independence, a time when the nation was starting to build its sports programs. Because there was little local expertise, Ten and other promising Kazakhstani athletes often had to look for training opportunities abroad to reach international competition levels.

Ten's journey to success involved overcoming significant logistical and financial obstacles, common for athletes from countries developing winter sports. His breakthrough at the junior level in the late 2000s happened alongside Kazakhstan's efforts to become a competitive presence in Winter Olympic sports, after gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
