Biography
Eva Magdalena Andersson was born on January 23, 1967, in Vaksala församling, Sweden. She is an economist and Social Democratic politician who was Sweden's first female Prime Minister from 2021 to 2022. Since 2021, she has been the Leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party and has been the Leader of the Opposition since 2022. Andersson has been a member of the Riksdag representing Stockholm County since 2014. She is married to Richard Friberg.
Andersson went to Katedralskolan for her early education and got a master's degree in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1992. She also studied at Harvard University and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna, which gave her a strong background in economic theory and policy. This academic foundation influenced her approach to fiscal governance during her political career.
Before being elected to office, Andersson joined the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League in 1983 as a teenager, showing an early interest in left-wing politics. She later worked as an adviser and director of planning in Göran Persson's administration and as an adviser to Mona Sahlin, gaining significant experience in government. After the 2014 Swedish general election, she was elected to the Riksdag and became Minister for Finance in Stefan Löfven's government, a position she held until 2021. She also chaired the International Monetary and Financial Committee from 2020 to 2022 during that time.
When Stefan Löfven announced he would step down in August 2021, Andersson was seen as the top candidate to replace him. She was elected leader of the Social Democrats shortly after. Her rise to Prime Minister faced initial hurdles: on November 24, 2021, she was first elected to the position but resigned the same day after the Green Party left the coalition government following a lost budget vote in the Riksdag to the conservative opposition. She was re-elected and took office on November 30, 2021, becoming Sweden's first female Prime Minister.
Andersson led her coalition into the 2022 Swedish general election, which ended in a narrow loss of the parliamentary majority. She announced her resignation as prime minister and was succeeded by Ulf Kristersson on October 18, 2022. She continues her political career as Leader of the Opposition, staying active in Swedish public affairs. In recognition of her impact, she was named one of the most powerful businesswomen in 2021 and received a Global Citizen Award in 2022.
Before Fame
Magdalena Andersson grew up in Sweden when the Social Democratic Party was a major force in politics, shaping the country’s extensive welfare system and collaborative governance style. She joined the Social Democratic Youth League at sixteen in 1983, a time in Sweden marked by debates over nuclear energy, Cold War neutrality, and the legacy of long-time Prime Minister Olof Palme. These early experiences rooted her in the values and structures of Swedish social democracy.
Her rise to national importance came through academia and work as a government advisor, rather than quickly moving up the electoral ranks. After earning her economics degree at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1992, she continued her studies at Harvard University and the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna, then took on advisory roles in Social Democratic governments. Working directly under senior party leaders like Göran Persson and Mona Sahlin gave her a deep understanding of budget policy and party management well before she ran for elected office.
