Biography

Malcolm Bligh Turnbull was born on October 24, 1954, in Sydney, Australia. He started his education at Vaucluse Public School and later attended the University of Sydney, where he earned degrees in Arts and Laws. His academic achievements earned him a Rhodes Scholarship in 1978, which enabled him to study at Brasenose College, Oxford University, where he completed a Bachelor of Civil Law degree.

Before diving into politics, Turnbull built a career over more than 20 years in various fields. He worked as a journalist, barrister, merchant banker, and venture capitalist, gaining significant experience in media, law, and finance. His business skills led to notable success in investment banking and telecom ventures. He actively supported republican advocacy, serving as Chair of the Australian Republican Movement from 1993 to 2000 and leading the "Yes" campaign during the 1999 republic referendum, which did not succeed.

Turnbull entered federal politics by winning the seat of Wentworth in New South Wales in the 2004 election as a member of the Liberal Party. He was the Minister for the Environment and Water in the Howard government from January 2007 until December 2007. After the Liberal Party lost the election, he became Leader of the Opposition in 2008. However, his backing of the Rudd government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme was divisive within his party, leading to a leadership challenge by Tony Abbott in December 2009, which Turnbull lost by one vote.

Following the Liberal-National Coalition's win in the 2013 election, Turnbull became Minister for Communications in the Abbott government. Due to ongoing poor opinion polls for the government, he resigned from the Cabinet on September 14, 2015, and successfully challenged Abbott for the party leadership, winning by ten votes. He became Australia's 29th Prime Minister, serving from 2015 to 2018. His term included economic hurdles, energy policy discussions, and internal party struggles, which eventually led to his step down as Prime Minister in 2018. He retired from parliament shortly after, concluding a 14-year parliamentary career.

Before Fame

Turnbull rose to prominence starting with his academic success at the University of Sydney, where his legal studies set the stage for his future achievements. Being chosen as a Rhodes Scholar in 1978 gave him international exposure at Oxford University, broadening his intellectual skills and worldview.

His blend of legal training, business skills, and media experience made him a notable figure in Australian public life even before he entered politics. Leading the republican movement in the 1990s made him a key voice in constitutional debates and showed his ability to advocate for major national issues.
