After finishing school at Nutley High, she attended Barnard College in New York City, studying art history and architecture while working as a fashion model to support her education.
After graduating in 1963, Stewart briefly worked as a stockbroker on Wall Street before moving into catering and event planning in the 1970s. She ran her catering business from her restored 1805 farmhouse in Westport, Connecticut.
