Biography

Lady Mary Fox, born Mary FitzClarence on December 19, 1798, in London, was one of King William IV's illegitimate children before he became king. Her mother was the well-known Irish actress Dorothea Jordan, who lived with the Duke of Clarence for about twenty years and had ten children with him, all given the last name FitzClarence. Mary was part of a large royal family acknowledged by the Crown but excluded from the line of succession because they were born out of wedlock.

Mary FitzClarence grew up in a household that, despite her birth circumstances, had social status and material comfort. The Duke of Clarence looked after his children with Dorothea Jordan, and they moved in high society circles. When her father became king in 1830 as William IV, the FitzClarence family's social standing rose significantly, and several of her siblings received titles and positions. Mary herself married Charles Richard Fox, which formally integrated her into British aristocracy and society.

After marrying Charles Richard Fox, Mary was known as Lady Mary Fox. Later in life, she became the housekeeper at Windsor Castle, a significant role at one of the main royal residences. This position put her close to the core of royal domestic affairs, reflecting both her family connections and the trust her father placed in her. Her work at Windsor gave her an inside look at royal life and palace operations.

In her later years, Lady Mary Fox took up writing, drawing on her unique experiences within royal and aristocratic circles. Though not a well-known literary figure of the Victorian era, her writings provided insights shaped by her background as a king's daughter, a nobleman's wife, and a royal household manager. She passed away on July 13, 1864, having witnessed the dramatic changes of British history from the Regency era to the early years of Queen Victoria's reign.

Before Fame

Mary FitzClarence was born in the late 1700s into a unique but well-supported family. Her mother, Dorothea Jordan, was one of the top comic actresses of her time, and her father, the Duke of Clarence, was an important member of the British royal family. While her parents weren't legally married, they had a stable domestic life that lasted twenty years, and their children were provided with education and social opportunities fitting their background.

When her parents' relationship ended in 1811, largely because the Duke needed to marry legally to ensure the lineage, it was a big change for the FitzClarence children. Dorothea Jordan passed away in 1816 under some financial strain in France, but royal connections continued to benefit Mary and her siblings. With her father's coronation in 1830, the family gained more recognition, and Mary's marriage to Charles Richard Fox solidified her place in high British society.
