Biography
Pratibha Devisingh Patil was born on December 19, 1934, in Nadgaon, Maharashtra, India. She went to Mooljee Jetha College in Jalgaon and then earned her law degree from Government Law College in Mumbai. After becoming a lawyer, she married Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat and started her political career with the Indian National Congress party.
Patil began her political journey at the state level in Maharashtra, gaining a name as a supporter of social causes and women's rights. Her legal background helped her as she took up legislative work, and she gradually became more well-known within the Congress party. Her commitment to public service and skill in legal matters readied her for higher political roles.
In 1991, Patil was elected to the Lok Sabha, serving from 1991 to 1996. During her time in Parliament, she worked on rural development, women's empowerment, and social justice. This experience further strengthened her resume for future government roles.
In 2004, Patil became the Governor of Rajasthan, a role she held until 2007. As governor, she managed her responsibilities well, working with various political parties. Her time as governor paved the way for her to take on the top constitutional role in India.
On July 25, 2007, Pratibha Patil made history by becoming India's first woman President. Her election was a major milestone for gender equality in Indian politics, inspiring women nationwide. During her presidency from 2007 to 2012, she fulfilled her duties with honor, welcomed foreign leaders, spoke to Parliament, and was the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. She focused on education, especially for women and disadvantaged communities. After her presidency ended in 2012, she was recognized internationally, receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Chile and the Order of the Aztec Eagle from Mexico.
