Biography
Megabazus, known in Old Persian as Bagavazdā or Bagabāzu and in Ancient Greek as Μεγαβάζος and Μεγάβυζος, was a top Persian military commander under Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire. As the son of Megabates and Darius's first cousin, his family ties likely played a big role in the trust and authority he gained during key military campaigns. Most of what we know about Megabazus comes from Herodotus's The Histories, which is the main ancient source on Persian military matters from that time.
Before Fame
Megabazus was born into the Persian aristocracy during a period when the Achaemenid Empire was strengthening its control over the Near East and expanding into new regions. As part of the extended royal family and the son of Megabates, an important figure, Megabazus would have grown up within the elite military and administrative environment of the Persian court. His early career likely involved serving in the imperial army, as Persian nobles were expected to show military skill and loyalty to the king.
