Biography
Melanija Knavs was born on April 26, 1970, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, which was part of Yugoslavia at the time. She grew up in Sevnica and went on to attend the Secondary School for Design and Photography in Ljubljana. She started her career as a fashion model at 16 while continuing her studies, eventually building an international modeling career that lasted decades.
After making a name for herself in the European fashion scene in Paris and Milan, Knavs met Paolo Zampolli, who helped her immigrate to the United States in 1996. She changed her name to Melania Knauss and began modeling in Manhattan. Two years later, Zampolli introduced her to Donald Trump at a party during New York Fashion Week, which started a relationship that led to their marriage in 2005 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
As a businesswoman, Trump launched her jewelry brand, Melania, in 2009, followed by skincare products and other ventures. She became an American citizen in 2006, the same year she gave birth to her son Barron Trump. She branched out beyond fashion into various luxury markets, making a name for herself as an entrepreneur separate from her husband's real estate business.
Trump was the First Lady of the United States from 2017 to 2021 during her husband's first term, focusing on initiatives like her "Be Best" campaign for online safety among children. She was the first naturalized citizen to become First Lady and the second foreign-born First Lady after Louisa Adams. After her husband's election to a second non-consecutive term in 2024, she assumed the role of First Lady again in 2025, becoming only the second woman in U.S. history to be First Lady during non-consecutive terms.
Before Fame
Growing up in Slovenia during the last years of Yugoslavia, Melania was introduced to fashion and design through her mother, Amalija, who worked at a textile factory. Her father, Viktor, was a car dealer and part of the Communist Party. The family lived simply in Sevnica, a small town that later became well-known because of her.
Melania started modeling in Slovenia and eventually broke into major European fashion cities. The 1990s fashion industry opened doors for Eastern European models to build international careers after communism ended, and Melania took advantage of this cultural change to start her career in Western markets.
