Biography

Sir Michael Caine, born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite on March 14, 1933, in Rotherhithe, London, is one of Britain's most celebrated and active film actors. Known for his unmistakable Cockney accent, he appeared in over 130 films in a career spanning eight decades, becoming recognized as a British cultural icon. He went to Hackney Downs School and grew up in working-class South London, which influenced both his on-screen characters and his unique voice. He was married twice, first to actress Patricia Haines and then to Shakira Caine, with whom he remains.

Before Fame

Growing up in postwar London, Caine was raised in modest conditions in the Elephant and Castle area after his family was displaced during the Second World War. He left school at sixteen and worked a series of odd jobs before landing a position as a theater assistant, which sparked his interest in acting. He served in the British Army during the Korean War before returning to pursue a career on stage and in minor television roles throughout the 1950s, choosing the stage name Michael Caine after seeing a billboard for the film The Caine Mutiny. His big break came in the mid-1960s when director Cy Endfield cast him in Zulu, a role that established him as a compelling screen presence and led to a string of iconic British films.
