Biography

Kolbeinn Sigþórsson is a former Icelandic professional footballer who played as a forward from 2006 to 2021. Born on 14 March 1990 in Reykjavík, he came up through the youth system at Víkingur Reykjavik and made his professional debut with HK Kópavogur at 16. His talent earned him a move to the Netherlands in 2007 to join AZ Alkmaar's youth program. Sigþórsson's big break came in his first season in the Eredivisie, attracting the attention of bigger clubs. In 2011, he transferred to Ajax, one of the top clubs in the Netherlands, where he became a regular in the first team and contributed to their domestic success. His time at Ajax was the high point of his club career, showing he could play at the top level in Europe. In 2015, Sigþórsson moved to French Ligue 1 side Nantes to take on new challenges in another top European league. However, injuries hampered his time in France, affecting his playtime and performance. A short loan to Turkish club Galatasaray in 2016 offered a change but didn’t fully restore his career momentum. Toward the end of his career, he returned to Scandinavia, playing for Swedish clubs AIK and IFK Göteborg before retiring in 2021. In his international career, Sigþórsson was a key player for the Iceland national team, earning 64 caps and scoring 26 goals between 2010 and 2021, during one of the most successful times in Iceland's football history.

Before Fame

Growing up in Reykjavík in the 1990s and early 2000s, Kolbeinn Sigþórsson started playing football when Iceland was just beginning to update its youth development systems. He worked his way up through the youth ranks at Víkingur Reykjavik, one of Iceland's older clubs, before the facilities and coaching that would later change Icelandic football were fully set up. His early move to HK Kópavogur at age 16 was a typical path for promising Icelandic players of his time, aiming for experience in local competitions before looking for opportunities abroad. Moving to the Netherlands in 2007 was part of a growing trend of Nordic players honing their skills in Dutch football, known for focusing on technical skills and tactical understanding.
