Biography

Min Hla Nge, also known as Minhlange, became king of Ava in 1425, ruling for about three months before being assassinated. Called မင်းလှငယ် in Burmese, meaning 'Min Hla the Young,' he was born in Inwa, the capital of the Ava Kingdom, around 1417 or 1418. He was the eldest child of King Thihathu of Ava, who ruled from 1421 until his death in 1425. Min Hla Nge was no older than eight when the royal court put him on the throne, making him one of the kingdom's youngest rulers.

His rise to power happened in a time of violence and politics. His father, King Thihathu, was assassinated in 1425, with Queen Shin Bo-Me, one of the royal consorts, involved in the plot. After the king's death, court officials followed succession rules and placed the young prince on the throne, likely aiming for stability in the kingdom. However, his reign was short-lived. Bo-Me, who had already plotted against Thihathu, soon targeted the new king.

Three months into his rule, Min Hla Nge was also assassinated, with Queen Shin Bo-Me again behind the act. Her motive was tied to her relationship with Prince Nyo of Kale Kye-Taung, her lover, whom she wanted on the throne. After Min Hla Nge's death, Prince Nyo became king of Ava, achieving Bo-Me's political goals. The queen's removal of both father and son was one of the more drastic episodes of court violence in the kingdom's history.

Min Hla Nge died in Inwa, the same place he was born, never having the chance to rule effectively due to his young age and brief reign. His story is more about being a pawn in a power struggle rather than a ruler. The Ava Kingdom at that time faced significant internal strife, and the back-to-back assassinations of Thihathu and his young heir show how fragile royal power was then. The boy king left no records of policies, military campaigns, or administrative achievements, with his reign mostly noted for its sudden and violent end.

Before Fame

Min Hla Nge was born in Inwa, the royal capital of the Ava Kingdom, during his father Thihathu's reign. As the king's eldest child, he was likely raised in the palace and educated as a royal heir. There's little detailed information about his early childhood or upbringing, which isn't surprising since he died before age ten.

In the early 15th century, the Ava Kingdom was a Burmese state that emerged after the Pagan Empire collapsed. It often faced competition from neighboring states and ongoing dynastic instability. Min Hla Nge lived his short life in this unstable political climate, becoming king not through his own actions but because of his birth and the violent death of his father.
