Biography

Mohamed Ennaceur was born on March 21, 1934, in El Djem, Tunisia, when the country was under French colonial rule. He studied law at Tunis University and later at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and Paris-Sorbonne University Paris IV. This education in law was key to his long career in public service and politics. His time in France linked him to a generation of Tunisian thinkers who would play key roles in building the state after it gained independence.

Before Fame

Mohamed Ennaceur was raised in El Djem, a town in central Tunisia famous for its well-preserved Roman amphitheater. Like many of his educated peers, Ennaceur went to France for advanced study, attending top universities in Paris to earn law qualifications. This was a typical route for Tunisian professionals who would work in the newly independent state's institutions.
