Biography
Néstor Carlos Kirchner Ostoić was born on February 25, 1950, in Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. He studied law at the National University of La Plata, where he met his future wife and political partner, Cristina Fernández. After earning his law degree, they returned to Río Gallegos and started a law practice together. Kirchner began his political career as mayor of Río Gallegos in 1987, serving until 1991.
Kirchner gained prominence in the province by becoming Governor of Santa Cruz in 1991. He showed political savvy by getting reelected in 1995 and 1999, thanks to constitutional amendments that allowed consecutive terms. As governor, he aligned with Eduardo Duhalde against President Carlos Menem, putting himself in the opposition wing of the Peronist movement. This proved important for his future national goals.
The 2001 Argentine economic crisis helped Kirchner gain national attention. When Eduardo Duhalde became president after Fernando de la Rúa resigned and Adolfo Rodríguez Saá's brief tenure, he encouraged Kirchner to run for president in 2003. Kirchner ran against former President Carlos Menem in the first round, where Menem got the most votes. However, facing likely loss in the runoff, Menem withdrew, and Kirchner became president on May 25, 2003.
During his presidency from 2003 to 2007, Kirchner focused on economic recovery and reform. He kept Roberto Lavagna as Minister of Economy to continue stabilizing Argentina's finances. His presidency tackled human rights abuses from the military dictatorship, aimed to reduce unemployment, and emphasized regional integration. Kirchner opted not to run for reelection in 2007 and supported his wife Cristina's successful presidential campaign. After her election, he served as Argentina's first gentleman until his death from a heart attack in El Calafate on October 27, 2010.
Before Fame
Kirchner's early years in Río Gallegos, the capital of Argentina's southernmost province, Santa Cruz, shaped his views on local politics and economic issues. After attending La Salle Florida, he went to La Plata to study law at the National University of La Plata in the 1970s, a time of political turmoil in Argentina. His university years overlapped with the end of the military dictatorship and the return of democracy.
His rise in politics started when he returned to Río Gallegos and established himself as a lawyer while making contacts within the Peronist party. The economic problems facing Patagonian provinces in the 1980s allowed for new political leaders to emerge, and Kirchner's legal experience and local ties made him a good fit for municipal politics. His successful run for mayor in 1987 showed he could connect with voters and manage local government during a time of national economic trouble.
