Biography

Napoleon III, born Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte on April 20, 1808, in Paris, was Napoleon I's nephew and was the longest-serving French leader since the old regime. He was the son of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland, and Hortense de Beauharnais, and was born into the imperial Bonaparte family at the peak of the First French Empire. His early life involved exile and political instability after his uncle was defeated at Waterloo.

After two unsuccessful coup attempts against the July Monarchy, Napoleon was imprisoned in 1840. The February Revolution of 1848 gave him new opportunities, and he became the first President of the French Second Republic. When constitutional limits prevented him from being re-elected, he seized power through a coup d'état in 1851, later declaring himself Emperor of the French in 1852 and establishing the Second French Empire.

As emperor, Napoleon III led a major modernization of France. He hired Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann to redesign Paris, creating the wide boulevards and grand buildings that mark the city today. His leadership expanded France's railway network, improved the banking system, and boosted industrial growth. He also backed the building of the Suez Canal and negotiated key trade deals, including the 1860 Cobden-Chevalier Treaty with Britain.

Napoleon III's foreign policy was ambitious but eventually led to his downfall. While he initially expanded French influence worldwide and took part in various military campaigns, his decision to declare war on Prussia in 1870 ended in a disastrous defeat. Captured at the Battle of Sedan, he was deposed, and the Second Empire fell. He died in exile in Chislehurst, England, on January 9, 1873, ending the Bonaparte family's rule in France.

Before Fame

Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte spent his early years in exile after Napoleon I's defeat, living in Switzerland, Germany, and England. He was trained in the military at Waffenplatz Thun in Switzerland and developed interests in writing and politics. His journey to power included two failed attempts to overthrow the July Monarchy—first in Strasbourg in 1836 and then in Boulogne in 1840, which led to his imprisonment in the fortress of Ham.

The political turmoil of 1848 gave him the chance he had been waiting for. The February Revolution that removed King Louis-Philippe left a power gap, and Napoleon's well-known name, along with his political writings from prison, made him a strong candidate for the presidency of the newly formed Second Republic.
