Biography
Narasimha Chintaman Kelkar, commonly known as Sahityasamrat Tatyasaheb Kelkar, was born on 24 August 1872 in Miraj, in the Chitpavan Brahmin community of Maharashtra. He studied at Rajaram College, Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, and Savitribai Phule Pune University. After becoming a lawyer, he expanded his focus beyond the courtroom to include literature, journalism, and political activism. He worked as a dramatist, novelist, short story writer, poet, biographer, critic, and historian, making him one of the most prolific Marathi thinkers of his time.
Before Fame
Kelkar grew up during a time of significant change in Maharashtra, when reform movements led by people like Bal Gangadhar Tilak were changing Indian public life. He was educated at some of Pune's top schools, learning both traditional subjects and modern political ideas. His close connection to Tilak and work with the newspaper Kesari first made him well-known, allowing his literary and journalistic skills to be recognized throughout Maharashtra.
