Biography

Tarabya was king of Ava (in modern-day Myanmar) for about seven months in 1400, making him the third monarch of the Ava Kingdom. He was born on December 22, 1368, in Inwa and was heir apparent from 1385 to 1400 under his father, King Swa Saw Ke. His time as crown prince was during one of the most unstable times in Burmese history, as the Ava Kingdom was in long-term warfare with the southern Hanthawaddy Kingdom based in Pegu. As a senior military leader, Tarabya was actively involved in Ava's first three military campaigns against Hanthawaddy Pegu from 1385 to 1391, part of the larger conflict known as the Forty Years' War. These campaigns built his reputation as a capable military leader and confirmed his position as the next in line for the throne. His marriage to Min Hla Myat of Ava further tied him to the royal court and nobility. When he became king in 1400, Tarabya's rule was abruptly ended by political intrigue within his court. He was assassinated by Thihapate, the governor of Tagaung, who had been Tarabya's tutor. This betrayal by a trusted mentor showed just how unstable political relationships were in medieval Burma. The court's quick action after the assassination showed the loyalty still held by the royal family, as Thihapate was executed, and the throne was handed to Tarabya's half-brother Min Swe, ensuring the dynasty continued despite the violent interruption.

Before Fame

Tarabya grew up during a time of political consolidation in upper Burma. The Ava Kingdom, created in 1364 by King Thado Minbya, became a key power center after the fall of the Pagan Empire in the previous century. As King Swa Saw Ke's son, Tarabya received extensive training in the military and administration to prepare for his future role as a monarch. When he was named heir apparent in 1385 at seventeen, tensions between Ava and the southern Hanthawaddy Kingdom were on the rise. His military education soon became crucial as the Forty Years' War began, giving him valuable battlefield experience that influenced his views on leadership and regional politics. As a senior commander in several campaigns against Hanthawaddy, he proved himself as a military leader and rightful successor to his father's throne.
