Biography
Nicholas James Vujicic was born on December 4, 1982, in Melbourne, Australia, to Serbian immigrant parents Dushka and Boris Vujicic. He was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder where all four limbs are missing. His birth shocked his family, and his early years were tough as everyone adjusted to his condition. Despite this, his parents, guided by their Christian faith, were determined to raise him to be as independent and normal as possible.
Vujicic attended Runcorn State High School and later McAllen High School, where he faced bullying and struggled with depression during his teen years. He has spoken about considering suicide at age ten, unable to understand his place in the world due to his condition. Things changed when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man living successfully with a severe disability, which helped him see new possibilities. His Christian faith grew stronger during this time, giving him purpose and direction that would shape his future career.
He went on to higher education at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia, studying financial planning and real estate. While at university, he began speaking at local church groups and community events, discovering his talent and passion for public speaking. These early talks set the stage for his global career in motivational speaking and Christian evangelism. After graduation, he started speaking beyond Australia, taking invitations in countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Vujicic founded a non-profit called Life Without Limbs, which focuses on his evangelical and motivational outreach. He also created Attitude Is Altitude, a for-profit company for his corporate and secular speaking engagements. Through these organizations, he has spoken to audiences in schools, prisons, hospitals, and stadiums, reaching hundreds of millions over his career. He has written several books, including the bestseller Life Without Limits, published in 2010 and translated into many languages.
Vujicic moved to the United States, became an American citizen, and settled in California with his wife Kanae Miyahara, whom he married in 2012, and their children. Besides speaking and writing, he has tried acting, appearing in the short film The Butterfly Circus in 2009, which won him a Best Actor award at several film festivals. He remains a well-known disability advocate and Christian speaker, continuing to tour globally and connect with audiences through social media, where he has a large following.
Before Fame
Growing up in Brisbane, Australia, Vujicic faced challenges in a body that the medical and educational systems of the 1980s and 1990s were still figuring out how to support. He was one of the first physically disabled students to join a mainstream school in Queensland, showing how inclusive education was starting to change in Australia then. The experience was tough, and he often felt socially isolated and was bullied by peers.
He moved toward public life not through official pathways but because of his own determination. As a teenager, he started speaking informally to groups at his local church and discovered that his story connected with people dealing with their own difficulties. By university, he was being asked to speak at schools and community groups, making it clear that he had a unique ability to engage audiences. His journey grew from personal faith and storytelling rather than institutional support, shaping the personal style that would define his global presence.
