Biography

Om Yun-chol, born on November 18, 1991, in Sunam-guyok, North Korea, is a retired weightlifter and coach who became one of the sport's most successful athletes. Competing mainly in the 56 kg category, Om was part of the Amnokgang Sports Team and was well-known internationally for his incredible lifting ability compared to his body size. Standing at 152 centimeters and weighing 55 kilograms, he showed that skill and power could overcome size at the top level of competition.

Om first gained international attention at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the 56 kg category, establishing himself as a major player in the sport. He repeated this feat at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, securing back-to-back Olympic golds in the same weight class. These victories placed him among the best weightlifters in Olympic history and made him North Korea's most celebrated athlete of his generation.

In addition to his Olympic success, Om won five World Championship titles, further proving his dominance in the 56 kg division. He set six world records, five in the clean and jerk and one in the total. His clean and jerk lifts often exceeded three times his body weight, a rare achievement in the sport's history. He managed this at the Asian Interclub Championships, the 2014 Asian Games, the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships, and the 2016 Summer Olympics, making him one of only seven men in international competition to lift at least triple his body weight in the clean and jerk.

After the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized weight categories in 2018, Om started competing in the new 55 kg class. He continued at the international level before eventually becoming a coach. His career covered a period of intense global competition in lighter weight categories, during which he consistently outperformed competitors from China, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe. After retiring, Om began coaching, sharing his technical skills with the next generation of North Korean weightlifters.

Before Fame

Om Yun-chol grew up in Sunam-guyok, a district of Pyongyang, North Korea, at a time when the state sports system actively sought out and nurtured athletically talented youth for elite competition. North Korea's centralized athletic infrastructure, which channels promising young athletes into specialized training programs from an early age, built the foundation for Om's development as a weightlifter. In a country where sports success is highly valued, he entered the weightlifting system and quickly moved up the ranks.

In his late teens, Om had already started to make a mark internationally. His early career showed great potential in the lighter weight categories, where his technical skill and strength-to-weight ratio made him stand out. The journey from youth competition to Olympic contention was relatively quick, showing both his natural talent and the rigorous training environment that shaped him before he hit the world stage.
