Biography
Peter Bolesław Schmeichel was born on November 18, 1963, in Gladsaxe Municipality, Denmark. Standing at 1.93 meters and weighing nearly 100 kilograms during his time on the field, Schmeichel became one of football's most dominant and successful goalkeepers. His professional career lasted from 1981 to 2003, during which he played for Gladsaxe-Hero, Hvidovre, Brøndby, Manchester United, Sporting CP, Aston Villa, and Manchester City, winning 24 trophies in total.
Schmeichel's most notable years were during his eight seasons at Manchester United from 1991 to 1999. Under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he won 15 trophies, including five Premier League titles and three FA Cups. The highlight of his club career was leading Manchester United to a win in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, completing an unprecedented series of victories with the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles in one season. His strong presence, vocal leadership, and excellent shot-stopping played a key role in United's success in English football during the 1990s.
Internationally, Schmeichel played 129 matches for Denmark between 1987 and 2001, making him the most capped Danish player until Simon Kjær overtook his record in 2023. A standout moment in his international career was Denmark's surprise win at the 1992 UEFA European Championship, where he was crucial to the team's victory. He also played for Denmark in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and three more European Championship tournaments, leading the national team in 30 matches. Unusually for a goalkeeper, Schmeichel scored 11 goals during his career, including one for Denmark.
Schmeichel's talent was acknowledged with many individual awards. He was named IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper in 1992 and 1993, and the International Federation of Football History & Statistics ranked him among the top 10 goalkeepers of the 20th century. In 2001, a Reuters public poll with 200,000 voters named him the best goalkeeper in history, ahead of legendary players Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and listed among FIFA's '125 greatest living footballers' in 2004. In 2022, he was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame, and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to football.
Before Fame
Schmeichel started his football career in Denmark's lower leagues, first with Gladsaxe-Hero in 1981, then moving to Hvidovre. He made his mark at Brøndby, where his performance in the Danish league drew interest from international scouts. The late 1980s and early 1990s were a time of change for European football, with player movement becoming easier and the game adopting more tactical, professional styles.
This period also saw Denmark's football talent rise, as the country became more prominent in international football. Schmeichel's growth happened during a time when goalkeeping shifted from being just a reactive role to needing more technical skill, the ability to distribute the ball well, and strong leadership - the traits that would later define him.
