Biography
Petro Oleksiiovych Poroshenko was born on September 26, 1965, in Bolhrad, a city in the Odessa region of Soviet Ukraine. He studied at the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, focusing on international affairs and economics. Before entering politics, Poroshenko created a large business empire, especially in the confectionery industry with Roshen, one of the biggest candy manufacturers in Eastern Europe. His business success led to him being regarded as an oligarch, and he was recognized as an Honored Economist of Ukraine. He is married to Maryna Poroshenko, and they have children together.
Before Fame
Poroshenko grew up during the last years of the Soviet Union, a time of political strictness that ended abruptly with its collapse and Ukraine gaining independence in 1991. His education in international relations helped him manage the uncertain post-Soviet period when Ukraine's new political and business leaders were emerging, mostly from those who could work between government and business. In the 1990s, he expanded his business ventures while also getting into politics, joining the Verkhovna Rada and connecting with different political groups as Ukraine worked to establish its identity after gaining independence.
