Biography
Ram Narayan (25 December 1927 – 9 November 2024) was an Indian classical musician who changed the role of the sarangi from a supporting instrument to a solo one in Hindustani classical music. He was born near Udaipur in Rajasthan and became the first sarangi player to achieve international success, performing worldwide for over six decades and earning recognition as one of India's top classical musicians.
Narayan started learning the sarangi when he was young and studied under various sarangi players and singers. As a teenager, he worked as a music teacher and traveled as a musician before joining All India Radio in Lahore in 1944 as an accompanist for vocalists. After India was partitioned in 1947, he moved to Delhi and later to Mumbai in 1949 to work in the Indian film industry, contributing to many film soundtracks.
In 1956, Narayan shifted to being a solo concert artist, playing at major music festivals across India. Presenting the sarangi as a solo instrument was groundbreaking, as it had mostly been used for vocal support. He recorded many solo albums and made his first international tour in 1964 to America and Europe with his older brother Chatur Lal, a skilled tabla player who had previously toured with sitarist Ravi Shankar.
Throughout his career, Narayan received many prestigious awards for his contributions to Indian classical music. He was honored with all three levels of the Padma awards: Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and finally the Padma Vibhushan in 2005, India's second-highest civilian honor. He also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Narayan continued performing long into his later years, keeping an active concert schedule and teaching students until he passed away in Bandra, Mumbai, in 2024.
Before Fame
Ram Narayan grew up in the traditional musical world of Rajasthan, born near Udaipur in 1927. He started learning the sarangi as a child from local masters and vocalists who saw his natural talent for the instrument. In his teens, he made a living as a music teacher and traveling musician, gaining hands-on experience across northern India.
His career took off in 1944 when All India Radio in Lahore hired him as an accompanist for vocalists. This job gave him steady work and exposure to top singers of the time. However, partition in 1947 uprooted his life, and he had to move first to Delhi and then to Mumbai in 1949. In Mumbai, he found work in the growing film industry, contributing to movie soundtracks while also honing his skills as a solo artist.
