Biography
Justin Pierre James Trudeau was born on December 25, 1971, in Ottawa, Ontario. His father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was Canada's 15th Prime Minister at the time, and his mother, Margaret Trudeau, was a well-known public figure. Growing up as the son of such an influential political leader, Trudeau faced both the advantages and the challenges of being in the public eye from an early age. He attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal and went on to McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. He later got a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia.
After finishing university, Trudeau worked as a high school teacher in Vancouver, where he taught French and mathematics. He returned to Montreal in 2002 to continue his studies and became more involved in youth advocacy and public service. Between 2002 and 2006, he led Katimavik, a national youth service program that promotes volunteer work and cultural exchange among young Canadians. His dedication to engaging with young people also led him to chair the Liberal Party's Task Force on Youth Renewal in 2006, where he advocated for the younger generations within the party.
Trudeau stepped into federal politics in 2008 by winning the Papineau riding in Montreal, which was traditionally difficult for the Liberal Party to win. This victory launched his parliamentary career, where he took on various opposition critic roles, focusing on issues like youth and multiculturalism, citizenship and immigration, and post-secondary education. His reputation within the party grew, and in 2013, he successfully ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. He won against several well-known politicians and took over a party that had dropped to third place in Canadian politics.
The 2015 federal election was pivotal for Trudeau and the Liberal Party. He led a campaign focused on economic growth, social justice, and political reform, taking the Liberals from third place to winning a majority government. This was the largest seat gain in Canadian electoral history. At the age of 43, he became Canada's second-youngest Prime Minister and the first child of a former Prime Minister to take on the role. His leadership from 2015 to 2025 saw many important domestic policies, such as the Canada Child Benefit, the legalization of medical assistance in dying and recreational cannabis, and a federal carbon pricing system. On the international front, his government was active in refugee resettlement, climate change initiatives like the Paris Agreement, and maintaining Canada's global commitments during uncertain political times.
Before Fame
Trudeau grew up as the son of a sitting Prime Minister, which gave him a close view of Canadian politics from a young age. He saw important events in Canadian history, like the October Crisis in 1970 and the patriation of the Constitution in 1982. Even with this political background, Trudeau first chose a career in education instead of politics. He worked as a teacher in British Columbia and later pursued graduate studies.
He became politically prominent through youth advocacy and charitable work, not the typical party route. His role with Katimavik and involvement with Liberal Party youth initiatives built his reputation as a supporter of young Canadians and social involvement. This background in youth work and education, along with his bilingual skills and charismatic public speaking, made him a strong candidate for political office when he decided to enter federal politics in 2008.
